Reading a COA Like a Lab Notebook

A lot of people stop at the purity number. That is usually the wrong place to stop.

If you’re comparing research materials, the COA is less of a trophy and more of a record. It should help you answer a few basic questions: what batch was tested, what method was used, what actually got measured, and whether the result belongs to the material in your hands or to some generic sample on a page.

The first thing I look for is traceability. A useful document usually ties together a lot number, test date, and the exact item description. If those pieces are missing, the paper may still look polished, but it’s harder to know whether the result is specific to your order or just recycled marketing.

Next is the method itself. “HPLC” sounds fine until you notice the rest of the page gives you nothing else. Was it HPLC with a clear detection method? Was there an MS confirmation? Is the chromatogram readable, and does it actually show the main peak and any notable impurities? The point is not to collect acronyms. The point is to understand what evidence supports the number.

Another thing people skip is consistency across lots. If one batch shows a tidy report and the next batch is vague, that gap matters. A company can have a good run and still produce a sloppy batch record later. For research use, repeatability is the real test. One pretty certificate does not tell you much about the next bottle.

I also pay attention to language. Strong documentation tends to sound boring. It lists facts. Weak documentation often leans on vague phrases like “high purity,” “premium quality,” or “top tier” without showing the underlying data. If the page is full of adjectives and short on method details, I treat that as a signal to slow down.

A simple way to review a COA is to ask four questions:

  1. Is the lot number clearly tied to the item I received?
  2. Is the testing method spelled out, not just named?
  3. Is the result dated and recent enough to matter?
  4. Can I compare this report against prior lots without guessing?

That is not glamorous, but it saves time. It also keeps the focus where it belongs: on documentation quality, not sales copy.

For anyone working in a lab or doing non-published screening, I think the best habit is to keep the COA, the storage notes, and your own observations together in one place. The more cleanly you track a material from receipt to handling to use, the easier it is to spot when a result changes for a real reason instead of a paperwork reason.

Good documentation does not prove everything. It just gives you a better starting point. In this space, that already matters a lot.
